Covid-19: AstraZeneca Vaccine
The Department of Health have issued the following statement today:
Press Release: Friday 19 March 2021
Statement from Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ronan GlynnOn Sunday, 14 March, the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) recommended the temporary deferral of the administration of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca following a report from the Norwegian Medicines Agency of cases of serious, rare thromboembolic (clotting) events, including some complicated by low platelet counts.
To date, no reports of serious clotting events associated with low platelets have been received by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) in Ireland. Over 117,000 doses of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca have been administered in Ireland.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA), through its safety committee conducted and urgent review of all blood clotting events occurring with the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca to determine if there is a possible safety risk.
The EMA’s preliminary report, concluded on 18 March, reported that the benefits of the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in combating the threat of COVID-19 continue to outweigh the risk of side effects. The EMA also concluded that the vaccine is not associated with an increase in the overall risk of blood clots in those who receive it.
The NIAC has convened and reviewed the EMA statement in relation to COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca and, following discussion with representatives from the HPRA, the National Coagulation Centre and counterparts across the EU, have recommended that the administration of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca should be recommenced.
Based on the assessments undertaken by the EMA and the NIAC, and the recommendations of the latter, I have recommended the recommencement of the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca programme.
The HSE will now work to recommence the administration of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca.

Covid-19: AstraZeneca Vaccine
The Department of Health have issued the following statement this morning:
Press Release: Sunday 14 March 2021
Statement from Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Ronan GlynnFollowing new information received from the Norwegian Medicines Agency on Saturday evening 13th March and following discussions with the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) has recommended that the administration of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca be temporarily deferred from this morning, Sunday 14th March.
This recommendation has been made following a report from the Norwegian Medicines Agency of four new reports of serious blood clotting events in adults after vaccination with Covid-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca. It has not been concluded that there is any link between the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca®️ and these cases. However, acting on the precautionary principal, and pending receipt of further information, the NIAC has recommended the temporary deferral of the COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca vaccination programme in Ireland.
The NIAC is due to meet again this morning. A further statement will follow thereafter.

We are compiling lists of patients in the relevant age brackets and hope to start Phase One of Covid-19 vaccine clinics in mid February 2021.

Key findings include how 1 in 8 older adults in Ireland are deficient in Vitamin D. You can read the full report here: Vitamin D deficiency in Ireland

European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) 2020
EAAD was marked on Wednesday 18 November 2020, in partnership with WHO’s World Antibiotic Awareness Week (18-24 November 2020).
Antibiotic resistance is the ability of bacteria to resist the action of an antibiotic. Antibiotic resistance severely limits the number of antibiotics available for the treatment of a number of diseases.
Before the discovery of antibiotics, thousands of people died from bacterial diseases, such as pneumonia or infection following surgery. Since antibiotics have been discovered and used, more and more bacteria, which were originally susceptible, have become resistant and developed numerous different means of fighting against antibiotics. Because resistance is increasing and few new antibiotics have been discovered and marketed in recent years, antibiotic resistance is now a major public health threat.
Without antibiotics, we could return to the “pre-antibiotic era”, when organ transplants, cancer chemotherapy, intensive care and other medical procedures would no longer be possible. Bacterial diseases would spread and could no longer be treated, causing death.

COVID-19 – Certificates of Fitness for Work/School/Creche
Please note that the doctors at Athboy Family Practice do not provide certificates for adults returning to work and studies or for children returning to school or creche.
The Health Surveillance & Protection Centre advises that such certificates are not necessary.
A parental self-declaration of child fitness form can be found here: https://www.hpsc.ie (appendix 1)
Nor can we, in the current circumstance of extraordinary demand, meet requests for letters detailing your current or past illness for the purpose of your return to your place of work or study or your child’s return to school or creche. (You can avail of a copy of your medical record at any time under the GDPR)
We are unable to offer opinions as to your safety in the workplace unless we have consulted you and advised that you are unfit. We shall not provide certificates of fitness to return to work, study or childcare.
Neither can we arrange Covid-19 testing for individuals who do not have symptoms of Covid-19. The GP does not arrange contact tracing and you can enquire at the Department of Public Health if you are asymptomatic and believe that you need to be tested: 046 9074612 (option 2)
See: https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/guidance/guidancefornon-clinicalsettings/ for the most up-to-date recommendations.
If your workplace/place of study/place of care requires such an assessment or certificate, it is the responsibility of that workplace/place of study/place of care to arrange assessments through an occupational health service.
Thank you for your understanding. We apply HSPC guidelines only and not those of other organisations or institutions.
We shall not be able to take phone calls about such requests. Please do contact us by telephone if you have symptoms that you are concerned about.

Should you wear a Face Mask during Covid-19?
The current advice from the HSE is that wearing a face mask is unlikely to be of any real benefit if you are not sick. However, by wearing Homemade masks, they can help prevent the spread of the disease from you to others (You may be asymptomatic with Covid-19 and not experience any symptoms). COVID-19 affects different people in different ways.
